On Nov. 8, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) recognized hundreds of dedicated volunteers at an appreciation event that celebrated their achievements made throughout 2022 and 2023.
“I am very proud of our volunteers. Their contributions to environmental stewardship demonstrate that the communities we serve have a strong interest in our shared greenspaces and ensuring that the natural treasures of our watershed are protected for future generations to enjoy,” says NPCA Board Chair, Robert Foster. “Our important conservation work continues and we look forward to engaging with our volunteers to support local environmental action throughout the Niagara Peninsula watershed.”
NPCA’s volunteer team continues to grow and currently stands at an impressive 718 individuals that have contributed more than 7,300 volunteer hours in 2023. Thanks to their efforts and commitment, NPCA installed 10 new pollinator gardens and hosted 23 community tree planting days which helped to plant thousands of trees throughout the Niagara Peninsula watershed.
The success of the 49th Ball’s Falls Thanksgiving Festival, which welcomed more than 28,000 guests this year, would also not be possible without the support of talented heritage demonstration volunteers that help to bring the site’s heritage village to life or the Eco-Defenders volunteers that this year helped to divert more than 3,000 kilograms of recyclable and organic waste from the landfill.
Additionally, NPCA's nature camps and educational programs benefit greatly from the contributions of youth and adult volunteers alike, who help to provide campers and students with the best outdoor learning experiences possible.
“Thank you to the NPCA volunteers that joined us and gave us the opportunity to share our deep gratitude for the precious time they’ve spent collaborating with us to support nature education, special events, stewardship and conservation,” says NPCA’s Community Outreach and Engagement Specialist, Kerry Royer. “It is said that nobody gets through life without someone else’s help, and we want our volunteers to know that we are forever grateful for their unending kindness, generosity and support.”
